The Annual
Taos Pueblo Pow Wow was established to showcase the natural beauty of the tribal
homelands of the Taos Pueblo People. The mountains and valley of Taos have long
since been an attraction to people from all over the world. Taos Pueblo,
historically, was a gathering place for tribes from all directions. Trading
included songs and dances, many are still used today by Taos Pueblo.
Taos
Pueblo is an ancient tribal community with many traditional ceremonies held
through-out the year. Some of these events are open to the public. For
observance of the traditional sacred ceremonies, the Pueblo closes completely.
The Annual Taos Pueblo Pow Wow is a contemporary celebration held on the tribal
lands of Taos Pueblo during the second weekend of July. The Pow Wow Grounds are
located approximately two miles northwest from the Taos Pueblo plaza.
For many
generations, the people of Taos Pueblo have traveled through-out Indian Country
to ceremonies, celebrations and pow wows to sing and dance. While out on their
adventures, they learned the ways of the people they visited, including songs
and dances. Pow Wows are held in common among Native Peoples and are a social
gathering to share new songs, friendships, trade stories and catch up on the
latest in Indian Country.
The Annual
Taos Pueblo Pow Wow is a three-day celebration. This celebration draws dancers,
singers, friends, relatives and visitors from across the North American
continent. The social and competitive dances are of Plains origin and are not a
part of our traditional religious dances. However, Taos Pueblo contributes to
the many songs and dances shared by tribes. Taos Pueblo is known across the
land for its Round Dance music that has been adopted and modified by other
Tribes to fit their singing styles.
The Taos
Pueblo Pow Wow offers a variety of arts and crafts by artisans and suppliers.
Many of these vendors follow the pow wow trail to Taos. From jewelry to
pottery, shawls to beaded items, one may find items to wear as part of a dance
outfit or to obtain as part of an art collection. A wide array of foods are
also offered at the Pow Wow. One can sample an Indian taco to a shish-K-bob to
a roasted mutton sandwich, as well as red chili, green chili and hamburgers.
Many of our food vendors are regulars and have attended this Pow Wow for many
years. So come and experience the Annual Taos Pueblo Pow Wow!
